3 Sq Miles Cup 2024

The second running of the 3 Sq Miles Cup sponsored by Cape Clear Distillery, saw boats from Baltimore joining with the SHSC fleet for a race to Cape Clear on a glorious sunny Sunday. The course took the fleet out from Schull Harbour, around copper point, with a beat to a laid mark a few miles south of long Island. With a run back to the Amelia Bouy and a reach out to the Middle Calf Island and onward to a finish at Cape's North Harbour.
Asked about the new race in the West Cork sailing calendar, SHSC Commodore Mark Murphy had this to say.
"The 3 Sq Miles Cup came into being from the genuine want to reconnect the 3 Mizen sailing clubs and build on connections of old.
While we all sadly miss the days of Cape Clear Regatta and the annual meeting of friends both old and new, we see the 3 Sq Miles Cup as the recommencement of the deep connection all sailors and boat users on the Mizen share with the magical Island of Oileán Chléire. Traditionally SHSC has had many fun and adventurous days and races to Cape, which have dwindled off over the years. This is all of our opportunity to once again relish in the beauty of the Island, spend time with fellow members of all clubs and have a ball of fun while we do it!
We are blessed to be able to call the Carbery's Hundred Isles our home, one of the most beautiful sailing grounds anywhere in the world. So it is wonderful to get out and celebrate it!"
Over 70 people gathered for the onshore festivities, with RIBs and other boats joining from Schull and Baltimore for a BBQ and prize giving held on the waters edge. The big winners on the day were the Dwyer family on "Joxer" who had a clean sweep of wins in all classes. Funds were raised for the local Cape Clear Island Defibrillator fund and were presented to Fiona, the driving force behind the great initiative on the Island.
We are looking forward to the 2025 event already.
